Power Factor is the measure of the efficiency of power being used by a machine or piece of electrical equipment. A power factor score can range from 0-1. A score of 1 means the power being used by the piece of equipment is being used 100% efficiently, whereas a score of 0.5 or lower means that the power being used is very inefficient and wasteful.

Power Factor Correction therefore aims to rectify the efficiency at which the power is being used. More electricity needs to be supplied by your provider to make up for the energy lost by inefficiencies in the circuit. Penalties are also charged by the supplier authorities to those companies that have a poor power factor score. To correct this, we can install switched capacitors into the power distribution board to improve the power factor to a value nearer 1.
